  8. D9o6ng So7n, a civilization from the Late Bronze Age that flourished in
  9. northern Vie65t Nam at around 800-300 BC, is associated with the Hu2ng Kings
  10. and the kingdom of Va8n Lang.  D9o6ng So7n developed from a series of related
  11. culture complexes that began with the early Bronze Age of Phu2ng Nguye6n
  12. (2000-1400 BC), a settlement centered in Vi4nh Phu1 province, northwest of
  13. Ha2 No65i.  Phu2ng Nguye6n culture developed on into the more elaborate
  14. Bronze Age periods: Middle Bronze Age of D9o62ng D9a65u (1400-1100 BC), the
  15. Bronze Age of Go2 Mun (1100-800 BC) and reached its climax with D9o6ng So7n.
  16. In excavations at the village of D9o6ng So7n, among the finds were bronze
  17. drums, bronze plowshares, fish hooks, axes, knives, plates of armor and other
  18. domestic objects.  Evidence suggests that the bronze technology of Vie65t Nam
  19. was developed independently from Chinese influence.

  21. The D9o6ng So7n people cultivated rice, developed irrigation, domesticated
  22. cattle, dogs and pigs, built canoes and navigated the seas with some
  23. knowledge of astronomy.  They practiced ancestor worship and animism.  The
  24. ashes of the dead were buried in jars.  Gods were related to agriculture.

  26. The bronze drum, 25 inches high and 31 inches in diameter, is decorated with
  27. an image of the sun.  Its many rays are surrounded by 16 concentric circles
  28. of various designs depicting deer, aquatic birds, people and aspects of
  29. everyday life.  The drum's surface is engraved with pairs of animals and
  30. birds heading East toward the sun.  The D9o6ng So7n drums, which depict
  31. dancers performing to the accompaniment of musical instruments, and the
  32. Neolithic lithophone testify to the existence of music and dance traditions
  33. in Vie65t Nam since the Bronze Age.
